Itinerary
Saturday, October 24: Avignon, France
Welcome to Avignon, a city of unparalleled beauty, curving its way over the river Rhône since 1840. The Pont Saint-Bénézet gained international fame through the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon.” Crossing it brings you to the Papal Palace—one of Europe’s largest and most important medieval buildings. This grand monument came to be thanks to the Archbishop of Bordeaux, who, unwilling to travel to Rome for his papal consecration, had himself crowned in Lyon and commissioned a palace in Avignon. (D)
Sunday, October 25: Avignon & Arles, France
Spend the morning continuing your exploration of Avignon before setting off for Arles, a pearl of Provence surrounded by some of Europe’s most beautiful natural parks. From Roman amphitheatres to proud patrician houses, Arles is steeped in history and art. Follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh as you wander through the town that inspired some of his greatest works. (B, L, D)
Monday, October 26: Arles & Rhône Delta, France
Enjoy a second day in Arles before returning to the ship for a scenic cruise through the spellbinding Rhône Delta. Weather permitting, enjoy evening drinks on the Sun Deck as your ship quietly glides through the water. (B, L, D)
Tuesday, October 27: Tarascon & Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France
Tarascon is rich with medieval charm. Visit the magnificent Tarascon Fortress, built in the 15th century as both a royal residence and a defensive stronghold on the Rhône. This remarkably preserved site now houses a museum showcasing art, furniture, and local history. Don’t miss the Collegiate Church of Saint Martha and the town’s celebration of its mythical Tarasque monster. In the afternoon, continue to Châteauneuf-du-Pape—literally “The Pope’s new castle.” Known for its full-bodied red wines and ties to Avignon’s papal past, this historic village is crowned by the remains of a 9th-century castle and surrounded by renowned vineyards. (B, L, D)
Wednesday, October 28: Châteauneuf-du-Pape & Viviers, France
Begin your day with more time to explore Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s wine culture and historic charm. Later, discover Viviers, a medieval town that retained its original layout thanks to Bishop Charles de la Font de Savine, who spared it during the French Revolution. Stroll through the divided city and climb the steps to the upper town for sweeping views. A visit to the tiny Saint-Vincent Cathedral—the smallest in France—is a must. (B, L, D)
Thursday, October 29: Tain-l’Hermitage, France
Opposite the town of Tournon and located in the Drôme department, Tain-l’Hermitage is famous for its exceptional wines and gourmet chocolate. Epicurean travellers will delight in tasting opportunities, and excursions to nearby Tournon will be operated from this location. (B, L, D)
Friday, October 30: Lyon, France
Lyon is a haven for lovers of fine cuisine and rich history. With over 2,000 years of heritage, this city offers something for everyone: the impressive Musée des Beaux-Arts, cobblestone streets of the Old Town, the Basilica Notre-Dame, and views from La Croix-Rousse. Experience Lyon’s culinary scene at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse or enjoy classic regional dishes in a traditional “Bouchon” restaurant. (B, L, D)
